Y-Couloir and Other North Face Ascents, 1-Day
Couloir climbing season is relatively short and but very sweet! When the Y-Couloir is in condition (later spring to early summer), it is a true alpine classic in big terrain. Climbers are drawn to its perfect beauty. “The Y” is a first steep snow climb and 14er couloir ascent for many aspiring alpinists.
We will depart Colorado Springs at 7am and access the high alpine via the Pikes Peak Highway. We will drop into the Bottomless Pit and begin the 2,100′ snow climb. We also have the option to start even higher on the highway and approach the couloir via the Hero Traverse above the western edge of the Bottomless Pit. This exposed warm-up piques your interest and tests your footwork in a dramatic alpine setting. Once the traverse is complete, we ascend the last 1,200′ of “the Y”. Both routes afford spectacular views as we climb directly up the north face of Pikes Peak in névé snow and through a short exposed rock band to top out in the middle of the broad summit of America’s mountain.
