While Barr Trail is the most traveled trail to the summit of Pikes Peak, the Crags route offers more solitude on the trail. The Crags trail is located on the far northwestern side of the mountain. Due to the location of the trailhead, this is an all-day event; a camping option may be considered. Offered year round.

From the Crags Campground, the trail climbs steadily through forest and an alpine meadow, crosses the Pikes Peak Highway, and continues upwards, following a series of rock cairns to the summit.  This route is 14 miles round trip and gains 4,300 vertical feet.  While the day is long, the views on this side of Pikes Peak are spectacular. As a side note, there are several hiking options located at the Crags trailhead that do not lead to the summit but make for shorter but equally beautiful day hikes.  Expect the summit hike to take 4-6 hours to the top; the round-trip travel time runs about 8-10 hours.
